So ends a generation. Born September 19, 1926 at home north of Smileyburg, Ks, Velva Ilene Post was born at home, the youngest child of Otto H.G. and Sadie (Adams) Post. Mabel was the name everyone knew her by. In 1944, after graduating from Anthony High School, Mabel met Hugh Brotton from Bluff City and after two weeks, they were married in Myrtle Beach, SC, where Hugh was stationed by the Army. As a stay at home Mom, Mabel participated in Mother Singers, TOPS, Bowling, Golf, Volleyball, Tennis, Bridge Club for over 60 years, EHU, and countless afternoons playing card games with her neighbors and family. In 1968, the family moved to rural Douglass on 80 acres dubbed "Green Acres" where Hugh continued to work at Boeing, raise a few cattle and try his hand at small acre farming. Mabel retired from AMCI and started her retirement years still playing cards and traveling. Mabel enjoyed her time with family and friends, and loved having company. If you came, you'd better be ready to eat! Mabel was a survivor and very strong independent woman with the most astounding capacity to love unconditionally. Her proudest accomplishments were daughter Janet and grandson Jason. She never seemed to tire of talking about either one of them to anyone who would listen. In her eyes, neither could do any wrong. She was spunky, pleasant to be around, and made friends wherever she went. Neither she nor Hugh ever met a stranger that didn't become a friend. Her quick wit and smile will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, gentle soul.
