Nancy Rose Stone

Nancy Rose Stone, 78, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016. Nancy was born to Stuart and June del Castillo in Oakland, California on February 19, 1938 joining older brother Don. Stuart and June divorced and June married Howard Davis. Howard raised Nancy and Don through adulthood. In 1958 Nancy married Duane Stone in San Jose, California. Patricia Lorene was born in 1959 and Christopher Duane was born in 1961. In 1964 Duane joined the Air Force and entered military family life. They lived in Altus, Oklahoma; San Antonio, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; Minot, North Dakota, they settled finally in Wichita, Kansas. Nancy received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and earned a Master’s Degree Special Education both at Memphis State University. She worked as a teacher in special education teacher while in Minot, North Dakota and Wichita, Kansas. Nancy worked for the Wichita School District for 20-years and in Andover High School for several years until retirement. Her hobbies included reading and gardening. Nancy enjoyed Square Dancing with Duane and was a long time member of Sweet Adelines International chorus. She was a wonderful cook, loved to sew and read. Nancy was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ (formerly known as Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints RLDS) and was ordained as a Priest. She was very involved at the RLDS Webb Road congregation of Wichita, Kansas, and attended many church reunions, camps and retreats. Nancy and Duane had a close family. Her Mom, June Hendricks, moved to Wichita joining the family for 15-years enjoying history, cooking and hobbies with Nancy. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Stone in 2006 and her mother June Hendricks in 2007. She is survived by her loving companion, Wendell Hewes; children, Patricia (Mark) Spencer MPA and Christopher (Lila) Stone MD; 9 grandchildren, Christopher (Katie) Stone, Jennifer (Austin) Isham, Megan (Cameron) Simmons, Tiffany (Jason) Koivunemie-Berg, Dana (John) St. Clair, Christen (Jessi) Thomas, Joey Stone, Philip (Sharissa) Miller and Max Davis. Nancy was blessed with 19 great grandchildren. Visitation: Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 1 to 8 pm with family present between 5 and 7 pm. Funeral: 2pm, Sunday, December 4, 2016; both at Reflection Pointe Funeral & Cremation Services, 3201 S. Webb Rd., Wichita, KS 67210. Interment to follow at Reflection Pointe Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside St., Wichita, KS 67219, Health Ministries Association, 1001 W. Walnut, Independence, MO 64050, or St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
